Randall's Mac 2 empire has been turning out hits since he first launched the label all the way back in 1996.Alongside long-time collaborator Coolhand Flex, Randall has brought through names like A Sides, Rising Sun, NC-17, Serum, Soul Intent and more. In time, the label has been reinvigorated as Mac 2 Digital, with an eye on the past to complement an ear on the past.
MAC2DIGI011 sees Trex release the Soul For Sale EP. Trex's music has seen the light on leading labels like Lockdown, Flexout Audio and Directors Cut, and now he rolls out on Mac 2 Digital. Support for the Camden-based artist has been far and wide, from Hype, Andy C, Grooverider and of course Randall. The title track startsthe release off, and, from its invigorating, soulful intro, right through to its energising beats and strong bassline, impresses from start to finish. Taking a turn away from the normal cliches, Trex isn't afraid to strike out on hisown. Opening a new chapter after the drop, Soul For Sale moves through different zones and areas, unitingaround ideas of togetherness and motion. Feel this one, this is just the start.
Easton meanwhile, breaks things down in a slightly more minimal, but equally funky way, with bright, boomingbeats and a nice line in rolling subs. There are samples a-plenty, as the producer shows his art with strengthand intensity. Elements of dub and old skool complete the picture, before we move on to Never See, whichvoyages into some deeper territory, with rangy beats and plenty of atmosphere in its synths, samples andslides. After the drop, we experience fields of low end pressure, with acres of bass for the dancefloor. Trex really does do it all, packing his experience and skill into each and every tune.
Closer Harlem Nights is a bouncing, bruising trip into the underground, punctuated by roaring bass and overlapping layers of sound. A fitting release for a label like Mac 2 Digital, Soul For Sale offers something for everybody.
